Tabitha Sindani explores her own experiences as a young woman going through a difficult period in life, while hiding behind the perfect façade of social media. Her mission is to empower women and girls to defy the culturally embedded status quo about their role and place in society, by embracing the unexpected turns and twists that life brings.
Tabitha Sindani is a doctoral researcher in Business Studies at Roehampton University Business School London. Her research focuses on policy and rural female entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa. ________
TEDx RuhrUniversityBochum was started in 2016 by a group of students enthusiastic about bringing the TEDx format to the Ruhr Area. In May 2019, we turned our TEDx conference into one of the largest TEDx events in Europe organized by students. We connected over 1,000 people at our TEDx event and brought 13 speakers to Bochum who presented their ideas and visions regarding the motto "Embrace the Unexpected".
„Embrace the unexpected“ is not just a theme, it is an attitude. It is to look courageously and curiously towards the future and confidently embrace the manifold challenges of our time. To understand the new and unexpected as a learning opportunity for progress and not as a source of uncertainty. Such an attitude is needed in a rapidly changing world, now more than ever.

Discourse on Africa has been focused on criticisms of its leadership - what many have come to term 'the crisis of leadership.' Rachel Nyaradzo Adams argues that what Africa is actually suffering from is a Crisis of Courage. This historical moment calls for African youth to cultivate their courage so that they can create the future that they prefer. This will require a drastic shift in our mindset, an openness to risking a lot and a strategic appreciation of the power of collaborations across borders.
Rachel is a leadership development consultant and coach and is committed to providing transformational tools to Africa's emerging and already existing leaders. Rachel Nyaradzo Adams is the founder of Narachi Leadership, a leadership consultancy aimed at developing deep benches of leaders for the African continent. Frustrated by the constant criticism of poor leadership on the continent, and equipped with leadership training approaches from some of the best institutions known to the world, Rachel has merged her frustration with her expertise in leadership development to help leaders transform themselves and their environments. In this work she offers her expertise as a leadership practitioner, ontological coach, mentor and speaker. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Mallence Bart-Williams introduced her second home Sierra Leone and its talented people, who are part of her project FOLORUNSHO. Find out more via http://www.tedxberlin.de
Mallence Bart-Williams was born in Cologne, Germany. She is a Sierra Leonean writer and filmmaker and a German fashion designer. She pursued her studies in economics and finance in Paris, Singapore, and Great Britain. Today she lives across the globe, produces an all-natural cosmetics line in Hong Kong, and is the founder and creative director of the Freetown-based creative collective FOLORUNSHO, a ‘SHARITY’ that she initiated with street kids in Sierra Leone.
Due to her German-Sierra Leonean roots she perceives herself as a bridge connecting two vastly different worlds. Her diverse background enables her to see creative solutions to common problems. Within their three years of operation, her collective has taken homeless children off the streets and into school, developed a sneaker and clothing collection, published a book and documentary of their story, and has held fine art exhibitions. Through her work with FOLORUNSHO she connects cultural contrast, enabling people to share ideas, take action, and get results.
