Growing up in a middleclass Kenyan household, Jesse Mureu Karanja acquired a privileged education which allowed him to study abroad, travel the world, equipping him with life skills he would not have been exposed to back at home. He had never really confronted his identity as an African but it wasn’t until the 25th of May 2016 where his perception of the African Continent was redefined. He saw the African person embrace their culture through the diverse foods, performances and colourful attire.
Agenda 2063, a strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next 50 years, aims at an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa. Presenting his view on his home continent’s future, hear what Jesse has to say about the Africa he wants. Jesse Karanja is a 23 year old Kenyan with a bachelor's degree in International relations. He is currently working in Germany’s capital Berlin, in PR&Communications as head conceptioner for projects in the Gulf and African region. Jesse is very passionate about the future of his continent and in this light decided to inform himself about what the African Union is currently doing. Upon stumbling on this framework “Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want”, Jesse realized that if Africa is truly transform itself, he would need to first be a leading example of the Africa he wants. By informing the world about this Agenda by the African Union, he is hopefully that many Africans will take it upon themselves to bring socio-economic development to their own continent.Jesse also recently became member of the Afro Deutsche Akademische Netzwerk (ADAN) here in Berlin and after meeting the team, he is hopeful that Africa has young, bright minds ready to tackle head on the problems crippling our continent.
Discourse on Africa has been focused on criticisms of its leadership - what many have come to term 'the crisis of leadership.' Rachel Nyaradzo Adams argues that what Africa is actually suffering from is a Crisis of Courage. This historical moment calls for African youth to cultivate their courage so that they can create the future that they prefer. This will require a drastic shift in our mindset, an openness to risking a lot and a strategic appreciation of the power of collaborations across borders.

Rachel is a leadership development consultant and coach and is committed to providing transformational tools to Africa's emerging and already existing leaders. Rachel Nyaradzo Adams is the founder of Narachi Leadership, a leadership consultancy aimed at developing deep benches of leaders for the African continent. Frustrated by the constant criticism of poor leadership on the continent, and equipped with leadership training approaches from some of the best institutions known to the world, Rachel has merged her frustration with her expertise in leadership development to help leaders transform themselves and their environments. In this work she offers her expertise as a leadership practitioner, ontological coach, mentor and speaker.
How unemployment became the ruby in my life | Tabitha Sindani | TEDx Ruhr University Bochum

#tedxrub2019 #embracetheunexpected #femaleempowerment

Tabitha Sindani explores her own experiences as a young woman going through a difficult period in life, while hiding behind the perfect façade of social media. Her mission is to empower women and girls to defy the culturally embedded status quo about their role and place in society, by embracing the unexpected turns and twists that life brings.

Tabitha Sindani is a doctoral researcher in Business Studies at Roehampton University Business School London. Her research focuses on policy and rural female entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa.
________

TEDx RuhrUniversityBochum was started in 2016 by a group of students enthusiastic about bringing the TEDx format to the Ruhr Area. In May 2019, we turned our TEDx conference into one of the largest TEDx events in Europe organized by students. We connected over 1,000 people at our TEDx event and brought 13 speakers to Bochum who presented their ideas and visions regarding the motto "Embrace the Unexpected".

„Embrace the unexpected“ is not just a theme, it is an attitude.
It is to look courageously and curiously towards the future and confidently embrace the manifold challenges of our time. To understand the new and unexpected as a learning opportunity for progress and not as a source of uncertainty. Such an attitude is needed in a rapidly changing world, now more than ever.

Find out more about TEDx RuhrUniversityBochum on our website: www.tedxruhruniversitybochum.de
Instagram: @tedxruhruniversitybochum

#tedxruhruniversitybochum #ruhruniversitätbochum #tedxtalks #tedkonferenzdeutschland #globalissues2019 #ruralfemaleentrepreneurship #culturalfeminism #subsaharanafrica

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Laiqa is an ambitious, vocal and focused student at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa. She has a passion for the Visual Arts and strongly believes in valuing one’s culture. She thrives in an environment that stimulates her intellectually and thus enjoys discussing real world problems and their solutions.
Abai Schulze urges us to see and capture the economic potential of the continent of Africa through its entrepreneurs. Africa cannot be “saved” through charity. But we can partner with, inspire, co-create and liberate the beautiful patchwork of human creativity and ambition across the great continent. She shares her own inspiring journey of establishing a high-end lifestyle and fashion brand, ZAAF in Ethiopia. Abai Schulze is the Founder and Creative Director of ZAAF. Her life journey has taken her from an orphanage in Addis Ababa to the United States, all over the world, and back to Ethiopia. She is part of a new wave of creative entrepreneurs who are redefining “brand Ethiopia” with her company, ZAAF, which produces premium leather goods and accessories all handcrafted by highly skilled artisans in Ethiopia. ZAAF was conceived with the goal of creating new economic opportunities by leveraging local resources, and its creativity has been widely recognized, ranging from appearing on runways at New York Fashion Week, to being featured in international high fashion magazines. Abai Schulze was the recipient of the 2014 UNESCO Tremplin Prize for Entrepreneurship. Through her work with FOLORUNSHO she connects cultural contrast, enabling people to share ideas, take action, and get results.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
